Monica caught Catherine out in the parking lot after church services the following morning.

“So how’d the big day go yesterday?” Monica asked. “I couldn’t believe it when Jason agreed to let me watch the girls so the two of you could go out to dinner together. This is so exciting. Your dream baby could well be on its way to reality and all with very little effort on our part, if you just don’t blow this.” Monica fluttered her lashes, clasped her hands over her breast and sighed meaningfully. “So give. Tell me everything.”

Catherine stared at her sister. She’d been up late trying to sort out her feelings toward Jason Engel. She honestly had no idea of what they were, how she stood with him or anything else of cosmic significance in her own small universe. The man was dangerously attractive. The more she got to know him as a person, the more attracted she was. Was Monica right? Should she forget about trying to locate a sperm bank and go for the guy next door?

Finally she just shook her head and shrugged her shoulders at Monica. “I don’t know what to say,” she admitted.

Monica appeared ready to burst. “Well, say something,” she implored. “I mean, come on, Catherine. There must be some little tidbit you can throw my way.”

But for some unfathomable reason, Catherine, who up until this point in her life had been constitutionally unable to keep anything, anything at all from her sister didn’t feel like sharing the details of last night. She didn’t even want to talk about her day at the mall with Jason and the girls. It would be like divulging secrets, private things.

What had happened last night that was so special she couldn’t talk about it, not even with her own sister?

Absolutely nothing. He’d picked her up; they’d gone to a terrific restaurant where they’d had great food and come home. Period. End of story.

Well, there was the way he had kissed her until she’d been oxygen deprived. At least, Catherine assumed that was why her vision had grayed out a couple of times during the thick of things. But, no, that was none of Monica’s business. Catherine was turning over a new leaf. She was no longer the kind of date who kissed and told—not even her sister.

“Oh, look,” Catherine said with relief. “Anna Freman is waving.” Catherine waved back and smiled. “She’s coming over.”

Monica glanced over her shoulder. “Darn,” she said even as she smiled at the approaching Anna. “We won’t be able to talk at all once she gets going. Talk about your motor mouth.... Anna, how are you? It’s been a month of Sundays since we’ve seen you. You look wonderful, so tanned.”

Anna beamed at the two sisters. “You noticed. Thank you. I’m just back from Florida. I was helping my mother get settled into her new condo. Between sneaking out to sunbathe—it was in the seventies and low eighties the whole time I was there, if you can believe that, and helping Mom decorate, I had a blast.
